Medford Market...

A food store whose time has come!
By Velda Welch

Is Medford ready for a cooperative food store located in the downtown area?

Many local residents have expressed an interest and offered help researching the steps necessary to establish such a member-owned and managed food store. From this group of community members, a steering committee has been formed to help guide this process.

A Visioning Meeting was held by the Medford Market steering committee on August 11TH at the Santo Community Center to get the public's input on what they would like to see in a cooperative food store. Despite temperatures in the high 90's, the meeting was attended by nearly one hundred people, who not only learned about the history and basics of cooperatives, but also participated in a lively town hall-like discussion - sharing many great ideas, concerns and suggestions. By the enthusiastic response expressed at the meeting, it was evident that the community not only desires a local food co-op but also is ready to help support the endeavor.

A survey designed to find out the needs and desires of the community was handed out at the meeting and is available on our web site. Over one hundred people have already taken the survey and the results will be presented on the web site soon.

What is a Co-op?
Cooperatives are member owned, member governed businesses that operate for the benefit of their members according to common principles agreed upon by the international cooperative community. Simply put, a co-op is a business voluntarily owned by the people that use it and operated for the benefit of its members.

Who We Are

We are a group of folks that live and work in Southern Oregon and see the need for a cooperative market in Medford. In hoping to fill that need, we want to speak directly to the community to determine how we can build the ideal market. We rely on your input and participation, so please join us October 13TH (see details above). Check the Medford Market web site often to keep track of the latest community happenings!

HOME REPAIR LOANS PROGRAM AVAILABLE TO RESIDENTS

The City of Medford offers a home repair program for income eligible homeowners through the Housing Authority of Jackson County. Funding for the program comes from the City’s Community Development Block Grant program. Over the past five years, more than 130 homeowners have used this program to repair roofs, fix plumbing and weatherize their homes.

House before
Home before the loan program

The Housing Authority administers an interest free deferred loan program designed to correct recognized hazards to the health and safety of the homeowners such as leaking roofs, inefficient woodstoves, failed heating systems, unsafe wiring, failed plumbing systems, broken water heaters, broken glass, dangerous lead paint and structural defects such as severe dry rot. In addition, the program will weatherize homes to achieve a more energy efficient environment for the homeowner.

Low income seniors or disabled persons may be eligible for assistance with the removal of architectural barriers, installation of ramps, handrails and grab bars as well as modifications of doorways.

The Housing Authority staff will conduct inspections, create work write-up, hold a bid conference with contractors and pay for the approved project. The owner chooses the contractors. All work will be performed by licensed and bonded contractors.
